Media Justice--2010 in Review
Greetings from UCC, OC Inc., the United Church of Christ's media justice arm. We've had an exciting year here at OC Inc., starting with our new web site this summer. We'd like to share some of our brightest moments this year.
2010 Parker Lecture. In September, we held the 28th Annual Parker Lecture, and were inspired by our lecturer FCC Commissioner Clyburn and the other honorees. You can see video of the event and our press release here.
A Legislative Victory for Low Power Radio! Just a few days ago, UCC OC Inc. played a critical role in a legislative victory that was 10 years in the making--passage of the Local Community Radio Act. This new law will expand opportunities for churches, community groups and civil rights organizations around the country to get their own radio stations. Start planning now -- if you are interested in a station, contact our allies at the Prometheus Radio Project. UCC OC Inc. is grateful to so many organizations and allies from the faith and civil rights communities for helping bring this legislation across the finish line.
Network Neutrality for Equal Internet Access. To top that off, the Federal Communications Commission adopted rules on network neutrality just before Christmas. This was a classic good news/bad news policy achivement -- we did get some rules, but there are important exceptions and limits in the future as the FCC tries to expand broadband to all Americans. For a look at why net neutrality matters, see the National Council of Churches net neutrality resolution.
